Recently got an old 80's road/touring bike courtesy of a very nice person from my local Freecycle group, i've managed to find out a little about it and hoping to fill in the gaps as i go along.

Mountain Bike

Decided to get back into bikes after a long abscence, having no illusions about actually off roading i decided to build a mountain bike equiped for road riding. My thinking was that it would be more than capable of taking a bash or two and would be a far cheaper option than making/buying an actual road bike.

Unfortunately the first bike i got hold of (old Specailised Rockhopper) suffered from an imovable bottom bracket due to there being no teeth on the left side (seriously, not worn, none!), i tried my best, so did the LBS, even tried welding the spindle to the bottom bracket, none of which worked. Still at least it provided a few parts i could use on another bike.

eBay came to the rescue with a very cheap 'unpainted' (more like unfinished IMO) lightweight aluminium frame and steel forks. After the grinder, dremmel, emery cloth and paint had given it a good talking too it didn't turn out too bad. It's pretty light (taking into concideration the cheap/old parts) and more than sturdy enough for my needs.

The only part i didn't manage to fit myself was the headset, i felt a bit of a failure as i've managed to install my own headsets in the past, but felt a lot better when the LBS mangage to do it and admitted they had to use a headset press for the first time ever!

Images soon...

Previous Bikes

Old Trek full suspension frame with Cannondale Moto FR tripple clamp forks, Shimano LX groupset, Club Roost bars, Planet X ahead stem. This met an untimely death the day after i had built it up, took a trip up to a downhill course in North Wales and managed to snap the seat tube doing backhops... Had the seat tube sleeved and welded and the top and downtube gusseted together. It was like a tank after that (they both weigh a lot and have minimal rear suspension) but i then moved to a flat concrete infested place that made off-road/downhill a hassle.

Unbranded chromoly frame with the parts from the bike below, this lasted me a while but was mainly used as a shop bike.

Catalogue special Coventry Eagle MTB, complete with the usual rubbish parts, a snapped top and down tube killed this bike after an overly optimistic steep bank ride...

Got a Unicycle one Christmas which I used for a long time, great fun and sad that I part-ex'd it for Bauer roller skates a couple of years later (still got them).

Had a couple of no-name road bikes aquired 2nd hand, nothing special but i do remember hand painting one of them a light blue with gloss paint, grim!

10 Speed road bike (2 chainrings, 5 speed cassette), although i can't remember the make or model, shockingly. Thought i was the dog's b0110x on this bike, first person in my area with a 10 speed :) It lasted me for many, many years and i rember going through at least 7 rear deraileurs and as many sets of forks. Snapped both the chainstays on one ocassion, which were then braised and worked fine aferwards. It lived a lot of it's life as a single speed bike mainly down to the fact that i never had a true back wheel for long and deraileurs love to catch in the spokes. Anyone who says a road bike shouldn't be used on a half pipe is mad, it's perfectly fine, just as long as you re-enter the ramp in a straight line...

Raleigh Chipper, like a mini version of the Chopper without gears, loved this bike to bits (literally) and thought i was Barry Sheene on it, took me through the card-in-the-spokes faze nicely. Being old enough to be slightly mechanical i discovering the joys of riding a brakeless bike one afternoon too! Eventually i grew to big for it and was pulling the wheel forward faster than it could be reset, wish i still owned it even so.

Solid rubber wheeled singlespeed, mechanical front brake, blue with a yelow chainguard. It's the first bike i remember and a hand-me-down, survived me learning to ride and jumping off the garden step :)
