On the 30th June 2009 my 360 got the red ring of death, I'd owned it for two and a half years although the manufacture date shows it to be 3 years old. Thought I'd document the process so anyone with the same problem will know what to expect.
I've sarcastically titled this section "The 3 Red Lights Experience", as unfortunately it seems nearly every 360 owner has to go through this process, as if it's a rights of passage, grrr.

Sadly my Xbox 360 has got 3 red flashing lights (power pack light showing green) which means it has to be returned for repair or replacement. Registered it for the repair service and waiting for further instructions. Looks like I'll not be on xbox live for a few weeks!
1st July 2009
Received some emails from Microsoft and UPS, printed off a delivery label and receipt then packed up my 360 and arranged for collection from UPS for tomorrow.
2nd July 2009
UPS picked up my 360 today. Now I have to wait for it to get to Germany, be repaired or replaced and sent back, fingers crossed.
4th July 2009
Checked the UPS tracker and my 360 was delivered to the service centre this morning. Waiting...
7th July 2009
Email from the Service Center telling me they'd received my console, pity it took them 3 days to work that out.
9th July 2009
Checked the Service Center and it's showing my console has been replaced or repaired. Checked on the UPS site and it's scheduled for pickup. But no contact from xbox stating what the problem was or when i should expect it back.
11th July 2009
The UPS site shows my 360 has been collected and is due for delivery back to me on the 14th. Still no email from Xbox since they said they had received my console.
The time scale so far has been pretty good considering they estimate 2 to 3 weeks and it has to travel overseas and back. The lack of communication from the service centre however has been slack, this kind of thing is easily automated and it would be nice to know what the problem was or if i am receiveing a repaired or replacement console...
13th July 2009
Got an email from Xbox Customer Services telling me my 360 is being shipped back to me (2 days after UPS collected it from their centre) and information how to track it's delivery, which I'd already been doing... They still haven't informed me if it's a repair or replacement but the link to Important Information About Your Downloaded Content After Console Repair/Refurbishment would suggest it's a repair.
14th July 2009
Got a new replacement 360 today along with an apology letter (but no details of what was wrong with my old console) thanking me for my patience. They also sent me a 1 month xobx live card as a goodwill gesture.
There was also a feedback form to complete, which got an overall rating of average from me due to the lack of communication from Xbox.
Big thumbs up to UPS for their excellent delivery times, tracking tool and friendly staff :)
