Winsocks

Winsock commands and information for Windows 95, 98 and ME.

Winsocks Registry Key Removal:

WARNING: Always back-up the registry before making any changes.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ System\ CurrentControlSet\ Services
Delete winsock and winsock2 folders from the registry.

Restart...

Windows 95

Start>> Find>> Files or Folders
Search for the file Winsock.dll and rename it to Winsock.old
Search for the file wsock32.dll and rename it to wsock32.old

Start>> Run>> command
extract /a /l C:\windows X:\win95\win95_02.cab winsock.dll
extract /a /l c:\windows\system X:\win95\win95_02.cab wsock32.dll
(X is the drive containing the Windows CD)

If Windows will not allow you to rename the files, restart the computer and try again.

If Windows will still not allow you to rename the files.
Start>> Shut down>> Restart in MS-DOS mode
At the prompt type the relevant one of the following commands and press Return.

Ren c:\windows\winsock.dll c:\windows\winsock.old
Ren c:\windows\system\wsock32.dll c:\windows\system\wsock32.old

Windows 98

Ensure Win 98 CD is available.

Start>> run>> sfc
Select “extract one file from installation disk” option.

Then type the relevant file name in the box below ie: winsock.dll or wsock32.dll and click start.

Windows will then ask where this file is to be copied from.
Type “x:\Win98” where x:\ is the drive that the windows cd is in.

The location the file is going to should automatically be in place, click ok

Windows ME

Start>> Run>> msconfig
Click on the "Startup" tab.

Remove the tick from "*StateMgr".
"Yes" to on the restart prompt.

Start>> Run>> msconfig
Click the "General" tab.

Click the "Extract File…" button.
Enter the name of the file, "winsock.dll".

Click "Start".
Restore from - Click (black arrow it will be there) or "Browse" to "C:\Windows\Options\Cabs".

Save file in - Click "Browse" go to "C:\Windows".
Click "Ok".
Click "Start".
Skip the backup.

Start>> Run>> msconfig
Click the "General" tab.

Click the "Extract File…" button.
Enter the name of the file, "wsock32.dll".

Click "Start".
Restore from - Click (black arrow it will be there) or "Browse" to "C:\Windows\Options\Cabs".

Save file in - Click "Browse" go to "C:\Windows\System".
Click "Ok".
Click "Start".
Skip the backup.
